Understanding the validity and acceptance of your TAELE certificate
If you’re considering taking TAELE, you may have an important question:
Will the organization I need to show it to accept my certificate?
The answer depends on the organization and the purpose for which you need to demonstrate your Spanish proficiency.
There is no single Spanish-language certificate that every organization worldwide is required to accept.
For this reason, we always recommend checking the requirements of the organization that will receive your certificate before taking the test.
What does a TAELE certificate certify?
TAELE is a Spanish proficiency examination provided by Academia Uruguay.
The examination assesses four fundamental Spanish-language competencies:
- Listening
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
TAELE certifies proficiency from A2 through C2.
Your certificate identifies:
- Your overall Spanish level
- Your level in listening
- Your level in reading
- Your level in writing
- Your level in speaking
The examination is conducted online with live remote proctoring.
Who provides TAELE?
TAELE is provided by Academia Uruguay, an established Spanish-language institution, itself accredited by the Instituto Cervantes.
Academia Uruguay is also a recognized DELE examination center.
Instituto Cervantes explains that DELE examination centers are centers recognized by Instituto Cervantes to administer DELE examinations. They are responsible for the organization and administration of DELE examinations according to the requirements established by Instituto Cervantes.
This gives Academia Uruguay direct experience within the international DELE examination system. However, TAELE is a different test, administered by Academia Uruguay only.
But TAELE and DELE are different examinations
This distinction is important.
TAELE is not an Instituto Cervantes examination.
A TAELE certificate is issued through Academia Uruguay and is separate from the official DELE diploma.
DELE is the official Spanish diploma awarded by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. Instituto Cervantes states that DELE has international recognition and indefinite validity.
Is TAELE an official Spanish government certificate?
No.
TAELE is a private Spanish proficiency certification provided by Academia Uruguay.
It should not be represented as a government-issued Spanish diploma or as an Instituto Cervantes certificate.
This does not mean that a TAELE certificate is unsuitable for your purpose.
Many organizations simply need evidence of a candidate’s Spanish proficiency rather than a particular government-issued diploma.
What matters is the specific requirement of the organization receiving your certificate.
How is TAELE accepted?
Acceptance is determined by the organization receiving the certificate.
For example, an employer may decide that TAELE provides sufficient evidence of a candidate’s Spanish proficiency.
A university may have its own language requirements and decide which certificates it accepts.
A government authority may specify a particular examination, such as DELE, for a particular legal or administrative procedure.
These are different situations.
Before taking TAELE, ask:
“Do you accept a TAELE Spanish proficiency certificate as evidence of Spanish language proficiency?”
If the answer is yes, TAELE can provide you with an independently assessed certificate documenting your Spanish level.
TAELE and DELE
DELE is an official Spanish diploma awarded by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education.
It has:
- International recognition
- Indefinite validity
- Levels A1 through C2
- Established recognition for educational, professional and official purposes
Instituto Cervantes also administers DELE through a network of more than 1,000 examination centers in more than 100 countries.
For some official procedures, DELE may be specifically required.
If you specifically need DELE, take DELE.
TAELE is not intended to replace DELE in circumstances where DELE is a stated requirement.
If you simply need to demonstrate your Spanish proficiency, TAELE may be an alternative.
The advantage of TAELE is that the entire examination can be completed online with live remote proctoring, without travelling to a physical examination center.
Why take TAELE?
Online
Take the examination from home, work or another suitable location.
Four skills
Your Spanish is assessed in listening, reading, writing and speaking.
Detailed certificate
Your certificate identifies your overall level and your level in each of the four competencies.
A2–C2
TAELE assesses Spanish proficiency from A2 through C2.
Fast results
Standard results and certification are normally provided within 72 working hours of your examination.
Experienced provider
TAELE is provided by Academia Uruguay, a recognized DELE examination center.
Your certificate and its validity
A TAELE certificate records the result of the examination you took and the Spanish proficiency level determined through that assessment.
Whether a particular organization accepts that certificate is a separate question.
Validity and acceptance are not the same thing.
A certificate can accurately document your language proficiency while an individual organization can still choose which certifications it accepts.
For this reason, TAELE does not claim that its certificate is universally accepted.
Instead, we encourage candidates to confirm the requirements of the organization for which they need their Spanish certification.
Need a certificate for a specific purpose?
If you already know where you will use your certificate, check their requirements before registering.
University
Ask the university which Spanish proficiency examinations it accepts.
Employer
Ask whether the employer accepts TAELE as evidence of Spanish proficiency.
Professional application
Check whether the relevant professional organization specifies a particular examination.
Government or immigration procedure
Check the current requirements of the relevant government authority. If it specifically requires DELE, take DELE.
In summary
TAELE is an online Spanish proficiency examination provided by Academia Uruguay, a recognized DELE examination center.
DELE is the official Spanish diploma awarded by Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. It has international recognition and indefinite validity.
They are different certifications designed for different purposes.
If you need official DELE certification → take DELE.
If you need convenient online evidence of your Spanish proficiency → consider TAELE.
And if you aren’t sure:
Ask the organization receiving your certificate before you register.
